Treat your excessive sweating problem with Botox®

Axillary hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating of the armpit. Everyone has armpit sweating, but for some, axillary hyperhidrosis involves an extreme amount of moisture in the armpit area. This type of excessive armpit sweating is resistant to anti-perspirants and causes embarrassment and inconvenience.

Botox® can be injected to reduce sweating. A series of small injections is made to block the nerves which stimulate the sweat glands. Most patients experience substantial improvement for a period of four to six months following treatment. There is no mandatory interval for repeat treatments, patients can choose to have additional Botox® whenever their excessive sweating returns.

What is Botox®?

Manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Allergan Inc., Botox® injection for facial wrinkles is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure in North America. Botox® Cosmetic is a purified protein which blocks nerve impulses to specific receptors. In the face, it reduces the activity of the muscles which cause frown lines and other facial wrinkles. The same type of nerve receptors control underarm sweating, so injecting the underarm causes reduced nerve stimulation to the sweat glands – in this case resulting in reduced sweat gland moisture.

The safety of Botox has been proven over years of clinical use. Prior to being indicated for cosmetic uses, Botox® has been safely used for medical purposes in opthalmology for decades. In addition to its cosmetic applications, Botox is now being used for the treatment of migraine headaches. click here to learn more about Botox for Migraines
